CHINA-INTERNAL: ECONOMY/LEADERSHIP

63-year old Mayor of Chongqing, Huang Qifan, who accompanied Chinese President Xi Jinping on his recent visit to the US this September is tipped to get a key appointment in China's economic establishment.

Huang Qifan, who is reputed to be well versed in economic matters,  had earlier been picked to be part of an exclusive panel that drafted the signature economic plan in 2013 and he was the only regional chief selected for the 28-member group charged with promoting Xi’s blueprint around the country. Huang Qifan played a central role in making Chongqing the starting point for the 700-meter Yuxinou train that connects China to Germany via Kazakhstan, Russia, Belarus and Poland.
(Comment: Huang Qifan is a member of the 18th CCP CC an is likely to be picked for an important role despite his close association with ousted and disgraced former Politburo member Bo Xilai with whom in 2010 he described his working relationship as “like a duck to water.”)
