CHINA-INTERNAL: LEADERSHIP

On the 11th anniversary of former Chinese Premier Zhao Ziyang's death, the former State Press and Publications Administration Director Du Daozheng said a few words in public. Accompanied by his daughter, Du Daozheng said: "Comrade Ziyang: Today is the 11th anniversary of your death. Comrade Li Rui called this morning, he's ill and cannot visit himself. He asked me to sign your memorial on his behalf.

The gross injustice of the June 4, 1989 Tiananmen Massacre has not been overturned. This will never disappear. At all times in all countries, all injustices and mistaken verdicts must be vindicated. Justice resides in peoples' hearts. Sun Yat-sen said: "Global trends are vast and mighty. Those who support them will prosper, those who oppose them will perish. China too must accord with historical trends. Your old friends and subordinates will not retreat even one step on cardinal issues of right and wrong."
There are too many lessons, and we have no other choice.
I want to confide in you: This year the Communist Party and nation staged a grand commemoration on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Hu Yaobang's birth, and made a fair evaluation of his accomplishments and errors. We are satisfied. The anti-corruption campaign is all well and good, but reform is lagging, especially the strict control on public gatherings. The masses are growing more and more alienated from the Party. this is worthy of attention."

(Comment: The Canada-based Bowen News Service reported that Beijing played down the significance of Zhao Ziyang's death anniversary to maintain stability. At dawn there were no more than 10 police cars parked in front of Zhao Ziyang's former residence on Dengshikou West Street. In addition, there were two buses full of petitioners, and two buses for staff. The "security forces" present on Fuqiang Alley are out of sight due to the seamless implementation of video surveillance systems. Other than Zhao Ziyang's family's relatives and close friends, hometown visitors and journalists from Japan's Kyodo News, Hong Kong cable television, and other media friends, the number of morning visitors expressing their condolences was smaller than in past years.)
