CHINA-HONGKONG: PRESS FREEDOM

Keung Kwok-yuen, the No. 2 editor in the newsroom of the independent Hongkong newspaper Ming Pao was fired on April 20, 2016, after the publication of a front page devoted to the offshore holdings uncovered by the Panama Papers of some of the city’s tycoons, celebrities and politicians. The Ming Pao claimed that it was cutting staff because of a “difficult business environment.” The paper’s employees, represented by the Ming Pao Staff Association, confronted the chief editor, Chong Tien Siong, in a tense meeting on April 20, asking for a more thorough explanation of why Keung Kwok-yuen lost his job.
