CHINA-US: CHINESE DONATIONS TO EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTES

 The US-based University World News reported on December 22, 2016, that a number of wealthy Chinese are giving donations to US educational Institutes. Chen, chairman of China’s Shanda Group, and his wife Luo who are now gave large donations to Caltech and say they will be donating US$ 1 billion on brain discovery, research and development. Some of the donations in 2016 are a US$ 30 million gift to Yale Law School from the Tsai family in honour of the late Paul Tsai, a Yale Law School alumnus from Taiwan; a US$ 7.6 million annual award to recognise outstanding research in education by Chen Yidan, co-founder of China’s Tencent media and investment company; US$ 1 million from Hong Kong’s Victor and William Fung Foundation to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology or MIT; and US$ 3.5 million to the University of Auckland, New Zealand by Hong Kong's Li Ka Shing.


Wealthy Chinese like Xiong Xinxiang, CEO of China’s Born Group (a huge media company) have also donated to Chinese institutions and he contributed CNY1.03 billion (US$148 million) to his alma mater, the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China in Chengdu, Sichuan province; Jack Ma, founder of  Alibaba, donated CNY100 million (US$14 million) to Hangzhou Normal University. The China Charity Alliance or CCA, which was set up by the Chinese government in 2013 said in a report released in November 2016 that in 2015 around 12 universities in China received single donations of more than CNY50 million (US$7 million) each from alumni.
