CHINA-PLA: PROTESTS BY DEMOBILISED SOLDIERS

HongKong's South China Morning Post reported on February 23, 2017, that Chinese military veterans demonstrated in central Beijing for two days, demanding unpaid retirement benefits. Hundreds of protesters, dressed in green and blue camouflage fatigues, gathered on February 22 morning outside the Communist Party’s headquarters of the CCP CC's Central Discipline Inspection Commission (CDIC) and chanted slogans. A smaller gathering of protesters outside the Ministry of Civil Affairs on February 23 was swiftly dispersed. , a demobilised soldier said, citing protesters at the scene. Though Chinese media did not report the protests, the spokesman of the Ministry of National Defence Ren Guoqiang said in a press conference on February 23, 2017, that the State Council and the Central Military Commission are concerned about the veterans and that measures are being taken to improve the livelihood of retired military officers.
 
(Comment: Grievances over military pensions have been a long-running issue and have in the past few years occasionally flared into organised mass protests. More than 1,000 veterans demonstrated outside Defence Ministry headquarters in Beijing last October and reports of scattered protests across the country surface regularly.)
