CHINA-ECONOMY: NORTH KOREA INVITED TO OBOR FORUM

South Korea's Korea Herald reported on May 9, 2017, that China's Foreign Ministry spokesman  Geng Shuang had said at the regular press briefing on May 9 that  "North Korea will send its delegation to the forum and will do relevant activities." China will host the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation on May 14-15, 2017, as it seeks to promote its initiative for building an economic belt linking Asia and Europe and even Africa through land and maritime silk roads.

(Comment: Reuters meanwhile on May 12, quoted two sources 'with knowledge of the situation' who said the US Embassy in Beijing had submitted a diplomatic note to China's Foreign Ministry, saying that inviting North Korea sent the wrong message at a time when the world was trying to pressure Pyongyang over its repeated missile and nuclear tests.)
