CHINA-INTERNAL: ENHANCED SECURITY IN XINJIANG

The Wall Street Journal on June 21, 2017, reported that Chen Quanguo, Party Secretary of the Xinjiang-Uyghur Automous Region, had recently launched a new campaign in Xinjiang called "Together in Five Things Campain" under which cadres are living in the homes of the Uyghur minority in the Autonomous Region. According to the official media, Xinjiang's security budget increased by 19.3% in 2016 to more than US$ 4.4 billion in 2017. The Xinjiang Public Security Bureau also recruited more than 30,000 new officers. Security measures now include visible anti-terror drills, shows of force by security services and installation of satellite tracking devices in cars. In February 2017, Chen Quanguo described the security situation in the region as "grim" and urged the People's Armed Police (PAP) to "bury the corpses of terrorists and terror gangs in the vast sea of the people's war".
