CHINA-US: ARREST OF US STUDENT

Guthrie McLean, a student of the University of Montana was detained on July 16, 2017, in China for what his mother and a family friend are calling "a shakedown." A U.S. State Department spokesperson said on July 17, 2017, "We are aware of media reports that a U.S. citizen was arrested in China. When a U.S. citizen is detained overseas, the Department works to provide all appropriate consular assistance. Due to privacy considerations, we have no further comment."
