CHINA-LEADERSHIP: 19th PARTY CONGRESS - BEIDIAHE MEETING

The annual meeting of top Chinese leaders at the seaside resort of Beidiahe where senior CCP appointments are decided, ended after 15 days on August 17, 2017. The retreat commenced on August 2, when reports in the media of the activities of most top leaders stopped appearing. Vice Premier Wang Yang departed on a trip to Pakistan on August 13. NPC chairman Zhang Dejiang began an inspection tour of Hunan on August 14. Reports indicate that some Beijing-based Politburo members, namely PBSC Member Yu Zhengsheng and PB members Sun Chunlan and Liu Yandong did not attend as they had gone to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Inner Mongolian AR in Hohhot from 7-11 August. Among the PB members in the provinces, only Shanghai's Han Zheng and Guangdong's Hu Chunhua did not attend. Hu Chunhua was reported appearing nearly daily in Guangdong, on inspection tours of Foshan and other points in the province.  Han Zheng did not appear as regularly, but appeared at least on the 11th and 15th in Shanghai.

(Comment: The duration of the retreat this year was 15 days. The retreat in  2016 was also for 15 days as was the pre-18th Congress 2012 retreat which was also 15 days.)
