CHINA-INTERNAL: 19TH PARTY CONGRESS-PROPAGANDA CONTROLS

Early in August 2017, the Beijing security authorities placed Zhu Delong, a Deputy Professor at the Capital Normal University in Beijing under five days' administrative detention  for posts that he had made online criticizing the growing "cult of personality" around Xi Jinping. He failed to reappear when that five-day jail term ended. Zhu Delong's detention came soon after his friend and Party ideologue Zi Su, who resides in Sichuan, was taken away by police after calling in an online letter for Xi Jinping's resignation. Veteran journalist Zhu Xinxin said "I think we are seeing yet another escalation [in the crackdown on free speech]. The available space for public debate is getting smaller and smaller; now you can't say anything that isn't flattering to the government."
