CHINA-JUDICIAL SYSTEM

Addressing a symposium, attended by more than 70 lawyers with a history of defending vulnerable groups in cases considered politically sensitive by the government, in Beijing from August 28-31, 2017, China's Minister for Justice Zhang Jun told the assembled lawyers that a "Western-style" separation of powers and judicial independence is not suited to China. Beijing rights lawyer Li Fangping asked Zhang Jun for information about disappeared rights lawyer Wang Quanzhang, who has been incommunicado since his detention in the July 2015, and was told: "Let's talk about that later."
