CHINA-LEADERSHIP APPOINTMENTS: SUN ZHENGCAI EXPELLED

Xinhua reported on September 29, 2017, that 54-year old former rising political star Sun Zhengcai has been expelled from the Chinese Communist Party and will face prosecution. Xinhua said he had been stripped of all official titles and that his expulsion had been decided by the Politburo on September 29, when it reviewed the Central Discipline Inspection Commission (CDIC)’s investigation report on the former Chongqing Party Secretary. It added that Sun Zhengcai had been handed over to judicial authorities for further investigation, meaning he faced criminal prosecution and that investigations had uncovered other evidence of Sun Zhengcai's alleged crimes, suggesting the probe was not over and more developments were to come.

(Comment: Sun Zhengcai was chastised in February 2017 for not having completely rooted out the “pernicious ideology legacy” left by Bo Xilai and his public security chief Wang Lijun. The admonition came at a politically sensitive time before the 19th Party Congress.)
