CHINA-INTERNAL: NEW EDUCATION NORMS IN XINJIANG

The state-owned Global Times on December 13, 2017, reported that in a  a move "to inherit traditional Chinese culture and explore core socialist values", the 7th Primary School, located in Kuqa county, Aksu prefecture invited calligraphy expert Wang Zufeng to teach students, and displayed the students' calligraphy works on campus. 
Separately, students from 15 primary schools in Kuqa county joined a classic Chinese literature reading contest on December 8, adding that the passages include those from the Confucian classic he Analects (Lunyu), and Di Zi Gui (Standards for Being a Good Student), a book which sets standards for being a good student and child. Students wore Han Chinese clothing while reading. The 7th Primary School in Kuqa county said that by learning traditional Chinese culture, "our country's core competitiveness can be promoted".
Primary schools in many Chinese cities are pushing for traditional Chinese culture education. The Beijing Education Commission said in September all teachers at Beijing's kindergartens, primary and middle schools will be required to take courses on core socialist values and traditional cultures in 2018. Classes teaching students to play Chinese chess and traditional local opera have also started in Fujian and Hebei provinces.
