CHINA-LEADERSHIP: XI JINPING'S NEW YEAR MESSAGE

China's official newsagency Xinhua on December 31, 2017 front-paged CCP CC General Secretary Xi Jinping's 1161-word New Year message, which was also repeated by China Radio International, China National Radio, China Central Television, China International Television (China Globo) and the Internet published Er 〇 Yi Ba New Year address. Extending greetings to "all the people of all ethnic groups in Hong Kong, to compatriots in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, compatriots in the Macao Special Administrative Region, compatriots in Taiwan and overseas Chinese" and "friends in various regions of the world", Xi Jinping reviewed China's economic, scientific and diplomatic achievements, which included a reference to "actively promoting" the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). He made specific reference to letters he had received from Yumai Township, Longzi County, Tibet Autonomous Region, residents of a Banner in Inner Mongolia, old professors of Xi'an's Jiaotong University and of Nankai University as well as newly enrolled college students. He said the majority of the people had high patriotic dedication and no regrets. Stating that 2018 is the first year for fully implementing the spirit of the 19th Party Congress, Xi Jinping recalled that it will also be the 40th anniversary of the reform and opening up and said these are necessary "for the development and progress of contemporary China and the only way to realize the Chinese dream". He emphasised the Party's "solemn commitment that poverty will be eradicated in rural areas by 2020", which he said "will be the first time for the Chinese nation to eliminate absolute poverty for thousands of years" and "is of great significance to the Chinese nation and to all mankind". Stating that "all parties have both expectations and worries about the prospects for the peace and development of mankind" he assured that "as a responsible big country" China "firmly upholds the authority and status of the United Nations, actively fulfills its due international obligations and responsibilities, abides by its promise of coping with global climate change, actively promotes the building of "the Belt and Road Initiative", always acts as a builder of world peace, a contributor to global development, and an international Order maintainer". e concluded by exhorting "Party committees, governments and cadres at all levels must take the safety and well being of the common people at their own heart and mind, regard the benefit of the people as their greatest achievement, think what the masses think and urgently urgently demand the people's happiness and contentment".
