CHINA-INTERNAL: CENTRAL POLITICAL AND LEGAL WORK CONFERENCE

The Central Political and Legal Work Conference held its meeting in Beijing on January 22, which was addressed over by Politburo member Guo Shengkun. Emphasising the need to improve the people's lives, he said  "we should pay more attention to long-term peace and tranquility" and "focus on reality and security." He also asked cadres to "ensure that the party's basic theory, basic lines and basic strategies are fully implemented in the political and legal organs and that "knives and knuckles" are firmly in the hands of the party and the people. Political and legal ranks should profoundly understand that the party's leadership is the soul of the socialist rule of law with Chinese characteristics, integrate the leadership of the party, the people as the masters of the country and the state affairs of the country according to law, properly handle the party's absolute leadership over the judiciary and the independence and impartiality of the judiciary in accordance with the law. Firmly resist the "tripartite balance of power" and "independence of the judiciary," and unswervingly act as the builders and practitioners of the socialist country ruled by law."
