CHINA-'SOFT POWER: UNITED FRONT AND CSSA IN US

There is a lot of focus on the activities of the Chinese Students and Scholars Associations (CSSA) set up by Chinese diplomatic missions in the US and elsewhere including the funding received by them from the Chinese Embassy/Consulates. Twenty six CSSAs have been identified in the US namely: Arizona State; California Institute of Technology; Claremont University; California State University; Fullerton Californis State University; Long Beach California State University; Northridge California State University,; New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology; San Bernardino East Los Angeles College; Northern Arizona University; New Mexico State University; Pasadena City College; Pepperdine University; Santa Barbara City College; San Diego State University; Santa Monica College University of Arizona; University of Hawaii; University of New Mexico; University of California, Irvine; University of California, Los Angeles; University of California, Riverside; University of California Santa Barbara; University of California San Diego; University of California; and University of San Diego.

(Comment: Each of the universities listed above receive regular annual funding from the Chinese Embassy or Consulate General in Los Angeles in addition to funding for special events. Some colleges receive upto one-third of their funding from the Chinese Diplomatic Mission. Activities of CSSAs are guided by a strict code including "loyalty to China" and their Presidents are approved by the Chinese Embassy.)
