Soon after taking over as President on May 20, 2016, there are indications that Ms Tsai Ing-wen appears to be reorienting Taiwan towards Japan. She has appointed DPP heavyweights Frank Hsieh Chang-ting as Taiwan’s de facto ambassador to Tokyo and Chiou Yi-jen has been appointed to direct Taiwan-Japan relations from Taipei.
