CHINA-INTERNAL: SECURITY

Opening of the annual 'Shanghai International Exhibition on Public Security and Safety' coincided this year with the 25th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square incident in June 1989.

China Public Security, a trade publication being distributed at the exhibition, claims the Chinese government has spent around 100 billion yuan ($16 billion) on more than 20,000 camera surveillance systems nationwide. Informal estimates, however, assess that possibly 100 million surveillance cameras are installed in China. According to China Daily, in 2011 Wuhan city had 250,000 cameras, while southwestern Chongqing had 60,000. After the riots in Urumqi in 2011, authorities said 17,000 cameras had been installed that year.
