CHINA-US: NAVY 'RIMPAC 2014' EXERCISES

The Chinese Navy fleet consisting of missile destroyer Haikou, missile frigate Yueyang, supply ship Qiandaohu, hospital ship Peace Ark, two helicopters, a commando and a diving squad, involving altogether 1,100 officers and soldiers , departed from harbors in the southern city of Sanya and eastern city of Zhoushan respectively. This is the first time that the Chinese Navy is taking part in RIMPAC.

Xu Hongmeng, PLAN Deputy Commander, said the mission was an important to build a new model of relations between China and the US and their militaries.

After the RIMPAC drill concludes, the Haikou, Yueyang and Qiandaohu will sail to San Diego, US for visits, and the Peace Ark will sail to Tonga, Fiji, Vanuatu, and Papua New Guinea for a medical service mission.
