CHINA-LABOUR UNREST

Reports reveal that the All-China Federation of Trade Unions (ACFTU) was active in breaking up what was probably the largest strike in China in the past 2 years. The massive three-week strike by 5,000 wokers five Flextronics factories in Zhuhai started on March 29, 2018. Flextronics is headquartered in Singapore. The strike was sparked by workers' concerns that the factory will be purchased by a Chinese company who will not guarantee salaries and benefits. The employer threatened to severely punish workers if they did not return to work before April 4th, and provided them with a reward of 1,000 yuan for returning workers. From April 8 onwards, employers reportedly employed security personnel to beat the workers.

(Comment: It is reported that in the first three months of 2018, the number of worker strikes was more than in the same period of last year.)
