CHINA-PLAAF: NEW AIRPORTS IN TIBET

China's official news agency Xinhua reported on June 8, that is planning to build three new airports in Tibet. These are proposed in Ngari, Shigatse and Lhoka (in fact near Yume village). Construction of the airports, “all above the altitude of 3,900 meters, should begin in 2019,” the report said. It added that the Capital Airport Holding Company will be responsible for the construction of the airport in Shannan, Shanghai Airport Authority will be responsible for the airport in Xigaze and the West Airport Group responsible for Ali.

(Comment: Of the three airports, a new airport was recently built at Gargunsa-Ali while the earlier one at Shigatse was upgraded with the addition of a new runway in July/August 2017. The airport near Yume village in Lhoka will be additional to that already existing in Nyingchi. There are currently five dual-use airports operating in the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) i.e. in Lhasa, Chamdo, Nyingchi, Ali and Shigatse.)
