CHINA-INTERNAL: RESTRICTIONS IN SICHUAN ON TIBETANS DRIVING MOTORCYCLES
Radio Free Asia (RFA) reported on 26 July that the authorities in Sichuan’s Serthar county are refusing to issue drivers’ licenses to Tibetan nomads. It said no official explanations for the refusals are forthcoming and calls seeking comment from Serthar police rang unanswered. A local source was quoted as saying the licenses can ordinarily be obtained on presentation of an application and payment of a 600 yuan (US$100) fee, but are now being denied. Tibetan nomads are increasingly relying on motorbikes for traveling long distances in remote areas.
