CHINA-AUSTRALIA: AUSTRALIAN PRIME MINISTER MALCOLM TURNBULL SOFTENS ATTITUDE TOWARDS CHINA

Speaking at the University of New South Wales on August 7, Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull in a departure from his previous speeches said Australia and China had prospered by deepening collaboration.  He said he wanted to identify misperceptions and propose "clearer thinking". Stating that "Rapid change can be unsettling. But it is a big mistake to assume it will inevitably lead to conflict ... just as it is a mistake to assume that China will assume vis-a-vis the United States the role of the Soviet Union in the Cold War, or for that matter, the United States and its allies would or should seek to contain China." He added 'a stronger, richer China will have a more assertive voice in world affairs, seek to persuade other countries that its views are correct and try to get the best deals in trade.
