CHINA-INTERNAL: ANTI-CORRUPTION CAMPAIGN IN PLA

Hongkong's South China Morning Post reported on August 24, 2018 that General Wei Liang, Political Commissar of the PLA Southern Theatre Command and  General Xu Fenlin, a former deputy chief of the CMC’s Joint Staff Department and former Commander of the now defunct Guangzhou Military Area Command, which was absorbed into the Southern Theatre Command, were demoted to deputy regimental officer as a result of unspecified disciplinary action. Separately, 55-year old Lieutenant General Yang Hui, Deputy Commander and Chief of Staff of the PLA Eastern Theatre Command, was put under investigation for alleged corruption on August 22, 2018. Yang Hui, once a 'rising star' in the military who was promoted to Lieutenant General in 2013 at the age of 50, was in charge of the PLA’s intelligence agency under the now defunct General Staff Department for four years from 2007. He was then promoted to Chief of Staff of the Nanjing Military Area Command before it was merged into the new Eastern Theatre Command. It quoted sources as saying "All three generals [represent] the harmful influence left by Guo Boxiong and Xu Caihou.”
