CHINA-SWEDEN: ALLEGED ILL TREATMENT OF CHINESE TOURIST

The latest diplomatic incident between China and Sweden that erupted in the media related to a Chinese tourist, Zeng, travelling with his parents and who were denied admission to a Generator Hotel in Stockholm. Zeng has accused the Swedish police of brutality. Zeng's accusations have received prominent coverage in China's official media with hints of retaliation like in the case of Norway. The Swedish authorities have not officially commented on the case. Any Chinese punitive response could have an economic impact since Chinese tourists spent $102 billion abroad in 2012 , making them the world’s biggest market for international tourism. They are also an increasingly dominant spending force in Sweden. Out of almost 4.7 million guest nights by international visitors in Stockholm County in 2016, Chinese nationals accounted for 117,476, a 74 percent rise from 2011, according to data published by the Stockholm Business Region, a company owned by the city of Stockholm. Most stayed in hotels, but 7,392 stayed in hostels. Meanwhile, the official Global Times reported that three Chinese tourists were brutally treated by the Swedish police on September 2 and Swedish and Western media outlets linked the case with the ongoing visit of the Dalai Lama  to Sweden. The Chinese Embassy in Stockholm issued a complaint over the ill-treatment of Chinese visitors on September 15. It claimed the time interval triggered speculation that China was using the incident to vent anger at Sweden over the Dalai Lama's September 12 visit to the country.

(Comment: The Dalai Lama is on a four-nation tour of Europe till September 23. Sweden is the first stop.)
