CHINA-US: JACK MA OF ALIBABA RENEGS ON PROMISE TO CREATE 1 MILLION JOBS IN US

In an interview with China’s state news agency Xinhua published September 19,  the Executive Chairman of Alibaba Group Holding Ltd.executive chairman of Alibaba Group Holding Ltd., Jack Ma backed out of his commitment to then President-elect Donald Trump in January 2017 to create 1 million jobs in the US.  The U.S. Trade Representative has placed Alibaba on a list of notorious marketplaces, saying the company’s Taobao site is riddled with counterfeit goods. Alibaba says it works to keep fakes off its sites. Earlier this year, Alibaba affiliate Ant Financial Services Group was barred from acquiring MoneyGram International Inc. by an American national-security panel. Earlier this week, he said the trade tension could last 20 years.

(Comment: Early in September Jack Ma made a surprise announcement that he was retiring from his position at Alibaba. A South China Morning Post column, which was quickly deleted by the paper, about the business dealings of Li Zhanshu's daughter just months before the 19th Party Congress, caused some real problems for Jack Ma in Beijing.)
