CHINA-INTERNAL: CHINESE STUDENTS FORM MAO-MARX STUDY GROUPS IN UNIVERSITIES

Chinese students are forming study groups to study Chinese communist ideology and discuss the progress of socialism. On the Chinese internet, thousands of young people participate in vibrant Maoist and Marxist chat rooms, and some have started leftist news websites, posting commentary on topics like pollution, globalization and economic theory, without much interference by censors, until recently. At least 40 of them after graduation converged on Huizhou, a manufacturing hub in Guangzhou, to organize labor unions at nearby factories and stage protests demanding greater protections for workers. The demonstrations in Huizhou were unusual because they were organized by students and recent graduates from some of the country’s top universities like Renmin University and Peking University. The students had gathered in Huizhou to join workers of Basic Technology who had been prevented from forming an independent union. The police cracked down on August 24 and arrested half a dozen students.

(Comment: The authorities are trying to control these 'Left' groups and are very nervous students and workers joining. Students have not participated in demonstrations after the Democracy protests of 1989.)
