CHINA-PROPAGANDA: CONTROLS ON MEDIA

The online news sites including Phoenix Satellite TV, one of the most influential Chinese-language media based in Hong Kong and the mainland, and 'i.feng' were issued notices on September 26, stating that networks must undergo a shake-up. The notice stated the network’s information channel, technology channel, and financial channels will be suspended temporarily from September 26 to October 10. An article in Radio Free Asia described this as a harsh punishment for a news station and reflection of Beijing’s tightened control over the news media. This is the third time this year that Phoenix News has been ordered to have an internal shakeup. It, along with six other online news websites, were criticised in February for providing “unauthorized Internet audiovisual program service” and later in April, the Phoenix News App was disabled and couldn’t be downloaded for two weeks. The financial section of 163.com was also ordered to shut down for two weeks from September 11-25. Radio Free Asia quoted a comment that the next target will be the portal website and Weibo.
