CHINA-INTERNAL: NPC STANDING COMMITTEE HAS STUDY SESSION ON AI

The NPC Standing Committee had a special 'study session' after its bi-monthly session on October 26, when they heard a presentation on artificial intelligence from Tan Tieniu, member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Tan Tieniu urged policymakers to: “fully recognize the long-term and arduous nature of AI to reshape traditional industries”; “rationally analyze the development needs of artificial intelligence”; and “rationally set AI development goals”. He stressed that it is critical that China develop its own technologies and said "China should develop its own AI technology in core key technologies and devices." Tan Tieniu also said China should export that technology to developing countries. He added “China is the only developing country that is expected to become a global leader in AI."; “[China] should adopt a different route from ‘economic monopolism, technological protectionism, trade hegemonism’ of some countries."; and"In line with the 'Belt and Road' strategy…[China should provide AI technology to] underdeveloped regions such as Asia, Africa and South America.”
