CHINA-TAIWAN

Zhang Zhijun, head of Beijing's Taiwan Affairs Office and the first Ministerial level official from the People's Republic of China to visit Taiwan in 65 years, had to cancel three public appearances on Saturday after violent protests against his trip.

Zhang Zhijun, who is on a four-day trip which commenced on June 26, 2014, said he had come to "listen to the voice of the Taiwanese people at the grass root level".  His visits to the southern city of Kaohsiung, Taiwan's high speed railway station and New Taipei City in northern Taiwan were marred by violent protests and Zhang Zhijun had to be protected by thousands of policemen.
