The People's Daily and Xinhua on January 2, 2019 publicised a statement issued by China's Ministry of Natural Resources announcing that China had set up ecological protection facilities on three reefs of the Nansha Islands, namely the Yongshu, Zhubi and Meiji reefs. The accompanying photograph showed a well developed installation with modern facilities as well as an anti-aircraft gun battery and a squad of soldiers.
