CHINA-US: VICE MINISTER LEVEL TRADE TALKS

Vice Ministerial level talks between China and the US began today and are being led on the US side by Deputy US Trade Representative Jeffrey Gerrish. Other members of the US delegation included Chief Agricultural Negotiator Gregg Doud, Deputy Minister of Trade and Foreign Agricultural Affairs of the Ministry of Agriculture, Ted McKinney, Ministry of Commerce. Gilbert Kaplan, deputy director of international trade, Steven Winberg, assistant secretary of fossil energy at the US Department of Energy, and David Malpass, deputy director of international affairs at the Treasury. There is no information yet on who is leading the Chinese side, but there is speculation it is Deputy Minister of Commerce Wang Shouwen. This is the first face-to-face meeting since Xi Jinping and Donald Trump declared a 90-day truce in the trade war at the beginning of December. The two sides have until March 1 to negotiate a more permanent settlement. The Chinese side expressed optimism and Chinese Vice Premier Liu He dropped in to the meeting.
