CHINA-LEADERSHIP: XI JINPING ADDRESSES PB MEETING

Xi Jinping, CCP CC General Secretary, presided over the meeting of the Political Bureau on January 25 to review the Reports of the Standing Committees of the CCP CC Political Bureau and of the National People's Congress as well as Reports of the State Council, the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Supreme People's Court, Supreme People's Procuratorate, the Work Report of the Central Secretariat, the Opinions of the CCP CC on Strengthening the Political Construction of the Party, the Regulations on the Report of Major Issues of the Communist Party of China, and the Regulations on the Selection and Appointment of Leading Cadres of the Party and Government. The meeting fully affirmed the Reports and agreed that in the past year, the five party groups have "conscientiously studied and implemented" Xi Jinping's new era of socialism with Chinese characteristics, the spirit of the Party's 19th and 19th Central and 3rd Plenary Sessions, and "safeguarded the party's central authority, and centralized and unified leadership". Noting that this year is the 70th anniversary of the founding of New China, it described it as a crucial year and said "we must strengthen the building of the party group itself, fulfill the overall responsibility of strictly administering the party's main body" and resolutely rectify formalism and bureaucracy. It said "the Central Secretariat should consciously set an example in strengthening and safeguarding the party's central authority and centralising unified leadership".

(Comment: Interesting is the emphasis on "safeguarding the party's central authority, and centralised and unified leadership", which is new.)
