CHINA-HONGKONG PROTESTS

Radio Hongkong (RTHK) reported the claim made by the Civil Human Rights Group, which organized the July 1 march, on July 4, that at least five of its members have been arrested. Two members, Daisy Chan and Ivy Chan, were arrested early on July 4 morning, while three more, including front convenor Johnson Yeung Ching-yin and two drivers of the lead vehicles in the protest action, were arrested later that day. Replying to reporters’ questions as to whether the arrests signal “political repression”, Secretary for Security Lai Tung-kwok said police have always been tolerant of protesters expressing their sentiments, but they are required to abide by the law.
