CHINA-JAPAN: US PLANS TO BUILD HOMELAND DEFENCE RADAR UNIT IN JAPAN

Hongkong's South China Morning Post reported (Jan 30) that Washington plans to ask Tokyo to host its Homeland Defence Radar unit, which is designed to give the US military an early warning of ICBM launches by China, Russia and
North Korea. Lance Gatling, a defence analyst and head of Asia-Pacific business for Texas-based Firefly Aerospace said the radar would probably be similar to the one Lockheed Martin is to build on the Hawaiian island of Oahu and priced at US$ 585 million. The news came after China released footage of its Dongfeng-26 ballistic missile -- also known as the 'Guam killer' for its range.
The radar, scheduled to be completed by 2025, would also enable the US to monitor foreign satellites designed to knock out US satellites, as well as tracking space debris. The sources said the US would share its data with Japan.
