CHINA-SOUTH KOREA: TERRITORIAL CLAIMS

The influential 'Zhongguo Qingnian Bao' (China Youth Daily), the official state-run newspaper of the Chinese Youth League (CYL) has on July 3, 2014, published a half-page advertisement by a South Korean civic group publicising Korea’s prefered name for its disputed waters with Japan. South Korea has been at odds with Japan for decades over the name of the disputed waters, with Seoul calling it the "East Sea" and Tokyo referring to it as the “Sea of Japan”. This is the first time that such an advertisement, which was published during Xi Jinping's two-day visit to Seoul, has been published by China's official media and could be indicative of Beijing for the first time publicly taking sides in the dispute.
