CHINA-PLA: ANTI-CORRUPTION

The US-based Duowei news service reported on July 9, 2014, that a total of eight PLA Major Generals are involved in the corruption cases relating to CMC Vice Chairman Xu Caihou and Deputy Director of the PLA's General Logistics Department (GLD) Maj Gen Gu Junshang. It said that five have been officially taken down for graft while the other three have had their careers essentially ruined.

It listed the eight as: (i) Yu Daqing, 57, Deputy Political Commissar of the Second Artillery Corps. He was to be promoted next month in August 2014, but his name has been deleted from the list; (ii) Huang Guozhu, 62, former President of the PLA Daily. He has not yet been charged with any wrongdoing and continues to be a member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and Vice President of the China Association for Information and Culture; (iii) Ye Wanyong, former Political Commissar of the Sichuan Military Region, who was dismissed as a member of the CPPCC late last month and is believed to be directly involved in Xu Caihou's case after being rumored to have bribed the retired general with a box of cash several years ago;  (iv) Zhang Gongxian, a former secretary of Xu Caihou who was recently dismissed as Director of the Political Department of the PLA's Jinan Military Region; (v) Wei Jin, Deputy Political Commissar of the Tibet Military Area Command; (vi) Lan Weijie, former Deputy Commander of the Hubei Provincial Military Area, who has already been apprehended by the PLA's disciplinary commission on suspicion of involvement in Gu Junshan's corruption case; (vii) Fang Wenping, former Commander of the Shanxi Military Region; and (viii)  Fu Linguo, former Deputy Director of the PLA's General Logistics Department.
