CHINA-LEADERSHIP: WANG YANG VISITS GARZE TIBETAN AUTONOMOUS PREFECTURE IN SICHUAN

Xinhua reported (may 27) that CPPCC Chairman and PBSC member Wang Yang (汪洋) conducted an inspection tour of Garzê Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan Province from May 25 to 27, 2019. Xinhua reported that he 'stressed that the Tibet Communist Party's working relationship with the Party and the country's overall work should conscientiously implement the important instructions of CCP CC General Secretary Xi Jinping's work on Tibetan areas and the party's strategy for managing Tibet'. He called on cadres to 'improve their political positions, adhere to the rule of law, enrich the people, and unite the Tibetan people's hearts, lay a solid foundation, unswervingly carry out anti-secession struggles, maintain normal order in the religious field, go all out to fight poverty and fight hard, and ensure the happiness and well-being of the Tibetan people and the overall stability of the society'.
Wang Yang went "deep into the rural areas, pastoral areas, and religious venues in Ganzi to understand the situation" and presided over a symposium that he “fully affirmed the achievements of religious affairs management and poverty alleviation work in Sichuan’s Tibetan regions since the 18th Party Congress”.  Wang Yang called for “persisting in the sinicization of China’s religions,” “guiding religious communities to consciously embrace the CCP’s leadership,” and “better adapting [religion] to socialist society.” He stressed the need to “take the lead in the ‘key point’ of temple management,” “resolutely guard the defensive perimeter against the infiltration of hostile foreign forces,” “augment the cultivation and use of outstanding representatives of Tibetan Buddhism,” and “accelerate the standardization of Buddhist schools.” Wang Yang also emphasized that “launching the tough battle of poverty alleviation is an important embodiment of the Party’s ruling objectives and powerful measure for doing ethnic and religious work well in Tibetan regions.” He added that the CCP must “concentrate its efforts on overtaking the fortress of absolute poverty in Tibetan regions” and “ensuring no ethnic group is left behind on the road to a comprehensive moderately prosperous society.”
