CHINA-US: U.S. SENATE CONFIRMS NEW AMBASSADOR TO CHINA

The United States Senate on  June 13, confirmed former Air Force Brig. General David Stilwell as the U.S. Ambassador to China. A former fighter pilot, Stilwell speaks Korean, Mandarin and some Japanese. He also served as defence attaché in Beijing. Lu Xiang, a specialist on US issues with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said Stilwell was familiar with Asian issues and described his time in Beijing, from 2011 to 2013, as “a period when China and the US had good military cooperation and communications”. Lu added “The confirmation of his nomination as the state department’s top diplomat for East Asia is a good sign to improve the US’ understanding of China issues. We hope he will make a positive contribution to the United States’ China policy.”
