CHINA-HONGKONG: HONGKONG CHIEF EXECUTIVE WITH-HOLDS PASSAGE OF NEW EXTRADITION LAW

Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam announced at a press conference on June 15, that she has suspended indefinitely efforts to pass a controversial new extradition law, after a week of unprecedented mass protests and street violence. She insisted her only errors were of communication and defended the much-criticised bill as vital to Hong Kong’s security. She declared she would present an improved version after further consultation. Carrie Lam also denied that the decision followed her meeting with Chinese Politburo Standing Committee member and Vice Premier Han Zheng in Shenzhen the previous day.
