CHINA-PLA: SENIOR OFFICER ARRESTED FOR ESPIONAGE

A report on July 17 disclosed that according to Hong Kong's "Ming Pao", the Deputy Director of the Equipment Development Department of the CCP Central Military Commission Qian Weiping, was arrested and investigated by the Chinese military for being involved in espionage in early July. It said when Qian Weiping's son who was studying in the United States returned home from vacation, he  electronically copied documents related to the PLA’s equipment and manned space flight and that although Qian Weiping was aware of it, he did not investigate it. The report added that Russian Intelligence informed China that Qian Weiping's son was working for the CIA. The Ming Pao reported that due to the Qian Weiping case, the Chinese military will examine the issue of foreign students studying in foreign countries. According to the newly revised CCP's "Leadership Report on Individuals in Leading Cadres Report", according to this stipulation, if the children of the CCP officials move or work outside China, they must report to the CPC Central Committee for more than one year. Study abroad is also included.

He used to be the chief engineer of the China Manned Space Engineering Measurement and Control Communication System. He was involved in the design of Shenzhou No. 1 to No. 9 communication planning and the No. 2 lunar exploration system designer. He was the former director of the Information Systems Bureau of the Equipment Development Department of the Central Military Commission of the Communist Party of China. He just became the deputy director of the equipment development department in April this year. His arrest is likely to have a serious impact on China's aviation technology and high-tech equipment.)
