CHINA-INTERNAL: POPULAR PROTEST

The "Nanfang Dushi Bao" reported on July 16, 2014, that a group of 7 petitioners (5 men and 2 women) committed mass suicide, outside the gates of the China Youth Daily newspaper in Hutong, Dongcheng District Haiyuncang 2, Beijing, that morning around 8.10 am. "Nanfang Dushi Bao" reported that the 7 petitioners are from the town of Si in Jiangsu province and were claiming compensation for their relocation last year. When they tried to petition earlier they had been forcibly detained by officials in a 'black prison'. When contacted by reporters, Party Secretary Qingyangzhen and Mayor Wangxiu Wu said they did not know the townspeople.
