CHINA-INTERNAL/POLITICAL: MONGOLIA

The influential newspaper 'Beijing Youth Daily' reported on July 22, that senior leaders of the CCP have been noticed visiting the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region  often in recent weeks. Yu Zhengshen, Chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, visited the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region between July 18 and 21. He became the fourth member of the Politburo Standing Committee (PBSC) to visit the region in the past six months.

Earlier this January, President Xi Jinping paid a three-day visit to the region and Premier Li Keqiang made two-day tours in March and April. PBSC member and Chairman of the Central Discipline Inspection Commission (CDIC) Wang Qishan, visited Inner Mongolia on July 3 and 4.

These officials toured several cities including Huhhot, Ordos, Chifeng, Xilingol League and the Hinggan League, covering almost  half the autonomous region.

There is speculation that the frequent visits to Inner Mongolia could be connected to finalisation of the corruption case against former security czar Zhou Yongkang. Rumors claim that Zhou Yongkang is detained at a military camp in Baotou City.
