CHINA-INTERNAL: RELIGION

Clashes have been reported between protesters and police in Pingyang County of Wenzhou city, Zhejiang province, on 21 July. The incident occurred at approximately 02:00 local time, when Christian protesters prevented police forces from removing a cross from in front of a local church. Several people were reportedly injured in the altercation. Unconfirmed reports claim that security presence has been  increased  in the affected area of Pingyang County.

According to protesters, multiple churches in Zhejiang province have received notices from the Zhejiang Provincial government demanding the demolition of church buildings or removal of crosses. Government claims this is a campaign aimed at removing illegal structures, but protesters assert that this is religious discrimination.
