CHINA-INTERNAL: LEADERSHIP

According to a recent study , the trend of 'leader worship' has gained ground in recent years and especially after Xi Jinping came to power in 2012. In his first 18 months in power, Xi Jinping’s name has been mentioned in 4,186 articles in the first eight pages of the People’s Daily, while his two immediate predecessors Jiang Zemin and Hu Jintao appeared in fewer than 2,000 reports.

The study also looked at the frequency of mentions of the six other Politburo Standing Committee (PBSC) members and observed that headlines on the front pages of the People’s Daily mentioned Xi Jinping 745 times, almost twice as many as Premier Li Keqiang and many more than the others.
