CHINA-US: XI JINPING -TRUMP TALK ON TELEPHONE

The People's Daily front-paged (December 20) a report that Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Trump spoke on the telephone on December 20 after the first phase trade agreement negotiations concluded. The People's Daily observed that during the conversation Xi Jinping stressed 'we express our grave concern over the recent negative words and deeds to the United States on issues concerning Taiwan, Hong Kong-related, involving Xinjiang, Tibet and the like. These practices interfered in China's internal affairs, hurt the interests of China, is not conducive to mutual trust and cooperation. We hope the US side to earnestly implement the important consensus reached our numerous meetings and calls of great concern and importance to China's concerns, bilateral relations and important agenda to prevent interference.' It said Trump replied 'I look forward to the opportunity through a variety of ways to maintain regular communication with you. I believe that our two countries can properly handle differences and problems, US-China relations can be maintained smooth development.' Xi Jinping said, I would like to maintain contact with you through various means, to exchange views on bilateral relations and international issues, jointly promote a coordinated, cooperative and stable Sino-US relations as a central theme.' The People's Daily report added that the two Presidents also exchanged views on the Korean Peninsula.
