CHINA-US: US WHITE HOUSE TRADE ADVISOR PETER NAVARRO PUSHES DRAFT PLAN FOR DOMESTIC PRODUCTION OF MEDICAL GOODS AND EQUIPMENT

The Daily Beast reported (March 19) that White House Trade Advisor Peter Navarro with President Trump's encouragement is pushing a slew of policies to ultimately curb the importing of foreign goods and create conditions that would allow for the increased production of American medicines, raw materials, and vaccines. It said in an interagency meeting last week, representatives from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and other trade officials voiced their objections to Navarro, saying the executive order could create more harm than good by restricting the flow of medicines and other supplies needed to treat coronavirus patients. Other high-ranking officials including Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin and White House Economic Advisor, Larry Kudlow, have reportedly voiced internal opposition to Navarro’s plan.
