CHINA-DISSIDENCE: PARTY TRIES TO RECTIFY WRONG DONE TO DR. LI WENLIANG TO ASSUAGE PUBLIC ANGER

More than a month after launching an investigation into local authorities’ handling of the case of Dr. Li Wenliang, a whistleblower doctor in Wuhan, the National Supervisory Commission (NSC) reported their findings on March 19. The NSC reported that the local police department had revoked the reprimand issued to Dr. Li Wenliang. The Wuhan Public Security Bureau also apologised to Dr. Li Wenliang's family and disciplined two police officers who oversaw the case. The NSC also acknowledged the good that Li Wenliang had done and said “[Li’s action] helped to push for the strengthening of virus prevention and control.” The NSC concluded that the mishandling of Dr. Li Wenliang's case was fundamentally procedural in nature, noting that the true cause of the virus had not been verified when Dr. Li Wenliang sounded the alarm. The NSC also tried to deflect and blunt possible criticism of the regime and said Li Wenliang was a Party member, not a so-called “opposition figure”.
