CHINA-DISCONTENT: CLASHES ON HUBEI-JIANGXI BORDER

Late on March 27, reports and videos were publicised via Twitter by Hubei residents who were trying to leave the province after the authorities had eased travel restrictions and the Jiangxi provincial traffic police who tried to stop them at the check-post. The civilians were supported by Hubei Police. Violent clashes occurred on the bridge between Hubei province and neighbouring Jiangxi province. The videos showed protestors running along the highway towards the check-post chanting "Hubei chayu" or "Free Hubei'.  The Hubei government had on March 25 issued a notice announcing the easing of interprovincial transport restrictions in an “orderly” fashion, with the exception of Wuhan.

(Comment: The clashes show the high levels of frustration among the people in thee province which was the epicentre of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) epidemic. People had gathered to collect the ashes of their deceased loved ones.)
