CHINA-INTERNAL: LEADERSHIP

A report in the Japan Times on Aug 4, quoting sources close to China's leadership, stated that 62-year old General Liu Yuan, the eldest son of late President Liu Shaoqi, is likely to be appointed to the Central Military Commission (CMC) during the Fourth Plenary meeting of the Chinese Communist Party’s elite 205-member Central Committee in October. The source said “Liu Yuan will at the very least become a member of the Central Military Commission. He could even become a vice chairman.”

General Liu Yuan was expected to be appointed to the CMC at the 18th Party Congress but his appointment was deferred. He is presently Political Commissar of the PLA's General Logistics Department.

General Liu Yuan, who is a close friend of Chinese President and CMC Chairman Xi Jinping, just before the 18th Party Congress  publicly announced that corruption was pervasive in the PLA . Xi Jinping made tackling corruption one of his top priorities since he took over the Party in November 2012, and began investigating the PLA's higher echelons since late last year.
